The game takes place in the semi-fictional state of San Andreas, which contains three main cities: Los Santos, based on Los Angeles, San Fierro, based on San Francisco, and Las Ventures, based on Las Vegas. These cities are separated by vast swathes of countryside and small towns. The story of the game revolves around gang member Carl Johnson, nicknamed "CJ", who returns to Los Santos from Liberty City, after hearing the news of his mother's murder. CJ finds his old friends and family in shambles. Over the course of the game, CJ gradually reveals the truth behind his mother's murder.
The game takes place within the state of San Andreas, which is based on sections of the states of California and Nevada. San Andreas has three main cities: Los Santos, which is similar to Los Angeles, San Fierro, which is similar to San Francisco, and Las Ventures, which is similar to Las Vegas. The environment surrounding these cities is designed to resemble the southwest region of the United States, which contains plateaus, plains, woodlands, and rural towns. There are in-game landmarks that resemble those in the real world such as the Vinewood sign built on the famous Hollywood sign, and the San Fierro bridges that resemble the Forth Road and Frth Neal bridges that connect Edinburgh, home of Rockstar North, to Fife.
